I guess we haven't done a good job of explaining it. &lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;Any athlete who has the potential to win an individual medal gets both the team/relay medal as well as any individual medals. However, if the athlete cannot possibly win an individual medal -- i.e. LeBron James and the U.S. Basketball team -- then you only get the team medal. As a rule of thumb, think of it this way: If you picked a team in the draft (Men's Basketball, for example), you get one medal, but no one else can share that medal. If you chose an athlete, you get points for whatever he or she earns at the Games. Thus, if you have Shawn Johnson AND Nastia Luikin, you would have 4 points right now, plus whatever they win going forward. &lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;In the context of gymnastics, the fact that an athlete (i.e. Chelsea Memmel) did not qualify for an individual event does not change her status. The key is the potential to win an individual event.
