Scoring Correction for Fantasy Olympics

As one of you noted in the comments below, the scoring for Peter Vanderkaay is incorrect. NBC's Web site originally listed him as a member of the 4 X 100 relay team (in the preliminary rounds), but that is apparently not the case. We will adjust the scores accordingly when we do our daily update this evening. Please note that the current 3 points listed for Vanderkaay do not include his bronze medal, which will be reflected in the Day 4 update. We apologize for any confusion.

I was wondering...shortest thing Petey swims is the 200 sometimes...

I have a question regarding scoring. I thought that if you had two people that were on a team together like gymnastics and they get a medal then it only counts once.

Hi Jim. There's actually been a lot of confusion on this issue... I guess we haven't done a good job of explaining it.

Any athlete who has the potential to win an individual medal gets both the team/relay medal as well as any individual medals. However, if the athlete cannot possibly win an individual medal -- i.e. LeBron James and the U.S. Basketball team -- then you only get the team medal. As a rule of thumb, think of it this way: If you picked a team in the draft (Men's Basketball, for example), you get one medal, but no one else can share that medal. If you chose an athlete, you get points for whatever he or she earns at the Games. Thus, if you have Shawn Johnson AND Nastia Luikin, you would have 4 points right now, plus whatever they win going forward.

In the context of gymnastics, the fact that an athlete (i.e. Chelsea Memmel) did not qualify for an individual event does not change her status. The key is the potential to win an individual event. Hope that makes sens.

Yes it does. Thanks for the clarification. I just thought I had too many points and I didn't want to be falsely winning. (I know, I know, To many points? there is no such thing.) I just felt I should be honest.
