Lee gets his first medal in typical Dark Cloud fashion: it would have been gold, but Lindsey Jacobellis fell at the end and finished second. Ouch.

Way to go Lee--sounded really close to a gold.

Hopefully our women's hockey can beat Sweden in the semifinal later today to ensure us all at least a silver!

Well, the whole strategy of drafting members of the women's curling and hockey teams has backfired. After today's losses, the curling team is probably out of medal contention... and the hockey team can do no better than bronze.

I know nobody has them--but I love watching Pizza Pete Fenson and the men's curling team. They have defied low expectations and beaten some great teams so far.

With all the team USA letdowns, watching these underdogs has been great. I take back all the bad things I said about Pizza Pete.

Speaking of USA letdowns, it seems the Team Stairwell has been a bit distracted as of late. I still have to have hope for my short-track heavy team whose finals come at the end of the fortnight, but no promises. At least I'm on the board ... I guess.

Hurray for women's hockey! One useless point for everyone!

too bad no one picked the ice dancers, the rhythmic gymnasts of the winter olympics.

Tiger Fan said...

Boo-yah! I was mocked on draft day for picking an ice dancer, but Tanith Belbin just moved me into a tie for first place! Dustin, it looks like this will come down to Shani Davis vs. Chad Hedrick (unless Lindsey Kildow or Emily Hughes can pull a big upset and make things really crazy). It's definitely going down to the wire!

LDelaveris said...

yeah, but you still picked an ice dancer, and nothing will ever change that.

Hahaha...Clark vs. Torres in the 1500m will be nearly as hyped as Davis vs. Hedrick.

I think Joey Cheek might even be a factor again in that race.

When asked about his thoughts on the results of the 1000m, Torres said, "I'm happy for Joey."

OOOOOOOOOhhhh...

dustin said...

Wow. 17-16 Bryan...the race lived up to its hype. Now there is a lot of pressure on Hedrick to medal in the 10,000m.

Bryan also holds the tiebreaker advantage with Germany outpacing Cananda.

This will be a great finish. Plus there are some wild cards out there: Kidlow, Ligety, Hughes...

Cant wait to see the Davis/Hedrick reactions tonight--that is going to be an interesting medal ceremony...hope they like the Italian anthem.

jdb said...

Bryan, I'll see your ice dancer and humbly raise you a figure skater in first place after the short program. Sasha Cohen (not to be confused wit Da Ali G) may be my last sequined hope.

Asked about the current results, "I'm happy for Lee."

LDelaveris said...

I'm willing to give Bryan an extra point as in my opinion Shani Davis is the greatest middle-distance whiner of all time, and is in a tight race for the gold in Selfishness at these games (others in medal contention are, of course, Bode Miller and the Italian girl who wouldn't talk to her ice dancing partner after he dropped her). Did you see him in the press conference after the race with Chad? Nobody talks about my cowboy like that...

So it has come down to this...

With Emily Hughes failing to win a medal, the stage is now set for a classic finale to the first even Fantasy Winter Olympics. Barring another medal from upstart Ted Ligety, the 10,000m showdown between rivals Chad Hedrick and Shani Davis will determine the winner. I cling to a 1-point lead and hold the tie-breaker as Germany runs away with the medal count... but Hedrick is traditionally stronger in this event than Davis. Can you feel the suspense building?

Tiger Fan said...

And by the way, congrats to Jeremy, who moved ahead of Lee with Sasha Cohen's silver medal.

LDelaveris said...

Even though I am completely out of the competition, I am really enjoying the photo-finish between Dustin and Bryan. Very nice work, guys. The winner will earn the status of a legend, but you both have made these first Fantasy Winter Olympics very enjoyable.

jdb said...

Indeed an exciting finish. Our competition is certainly more suspenseful, and I can't imagine ever getting through the games without this. Gentlemen, start your Olympians.

dustin said...

looking at the events left, i think team USA may still have a shot at catching the Germans in the medal count...that would be the icing on the cake for our inaugural FWO.

By the way, I think we should have a ceremony in Vegas in which the winner plays an anthem of his choice (a la goofy guy on the cell phone commercial).

Tiger Fan said...

I don't know about the anthems, but medals are definitely in order. Everyone keep an eye out for cheap, cheesy medals... and that still means there is a battle for bronze between Lee and Jeremy.

dustin said...

Holy crap! Julie Mancuso won gold!?! She shook up the world--and this competition.

Now Hedrick and Ligety need to come up big or Bryan might have this won.

Tiger Fan said...

Truly a shocker! My jaw literally dropped when I got online today. Unbelievable turn of events!

Tiger Fan said...

And also... apparently, we should have done our research. Davis doesn't compete in the 10,000m. If Hedrick wins gold, it will give me a one-point advantage going into Saturday's slalom as the hopes of Dustin's team rest on the not-so-broad shoulders of Ted Ligety. Whew... this is wild.

jdb said...

Of course Davis doesn't race in the 10,000m. He's probably "resting up" for his next event ... in 2010.

dustin said...

I need a gold and a silver.

Hedrick is the world record holder in the 10,000m.

Ligety is the top U.S. slalom skier. In th most recent world cup event in January, he placed second.

COULD THIS BE ANY MORE EXCITING?!

LDelaveris said...

Wow! Julie "Prime-Time" Mancuso comes out of nowhere. This is nuts.

So, we are proposing medals as the awards? I like it. Also, I think there should probably also be a free drink or something from each of us for the gold medalist.

LDelaveris said...

Dustin, I think you better call Ted "Giggity Giggity" Ligety and get him fired up.

dustin said...

Chad gets Silver in the 10,000m.

20-18 now...

Need a gold from Ted tomorrow.

LDelaveris said...

And for those watching the tight contest for the bronze medal, my hopes rest on Todd Hays to pilot the 4-man team to at least a silver.

LDelaveris said...

oh no, wait. The Stairwell's Steve Mesler nullifies my Todd Hays. As far as I can tell, Jeremy has taken the bronze.

dustin said...

Ligety got DQ'ed. Not sure what happened yet--guess we'll find out later.

Bryan is Golden. Mancuso is a legend.
